Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus. The mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person with dengue virus in their blood. But, it cannot be spread directly from one person to another person. The World Health Organization estimates there may be 50–100 million dengue infections worldwide every year.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is systemic disease caused by one of four sero-types of virus from the genus Flavivirus, which also includes the pathogens responsible for yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis.
Sometimes, the symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for those of the flu or other viral infections. Young children and people who have never had the infection may tend to have milder cases than older children and adults. But, you should remember that these can develop into serious problems later. These symptoms could also lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, a rare complication characterized by high fever, damage to the lymph and blood vessels, bleeding from the nose and gums, enlargement of the liver, and failure of the circulatory system. The symptoms may lead to massive bleeding, shock, and ultimately death. This is called Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). People with weakened immune systems, as well as those with a second or subsequent dengue infection, could be at a greater risk for developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.
